The LTHS Guidance Department is excited to invite families and students in grades 9-12 to attend the 10th Annual College & Career event designed to support you at every stage of the postsecondary planning process. This year's event features a variety of breakout sessions tailored to provide valuable guidance and resources for navigating college and career decisions. Whether you're just beginning your journey or preparing for the step, our goal is to provide the tools and knowledge needed for success beyond LTHS.
Students and families are invited to select one informative presentation during each scheduled time slot:
Beginning the College Search Process
This session will discuss the college admissions process including beginning the college search, and what colleges are looking for. We will also review the college admission criteria from public and private universities. This is a great presentation for those going through this process for the first time!
Before You Apply - Juniors' Guide to College Applications
New! This session will discuss the college admissions process for juniors as they finalize their search, take their visits, research financial aid calculators, and begin the applications in the late summer/fall. Timelines for senior year will also be discussed.
Earning College Credit at LTHS
This session will discuss the various opportunities for LTHS students to earn college credit while in high school. Information will be provided on dual credit, AP credit, and Lewis University credit. We will also discuss the benefits of earning college credit while in high school.
FAFSA/Financial Aid Options for College
This session will provide information to students and parents about financing an education beyond high school. Topics will include Cost of Attendance, Student Aid Index, FAFSA, Financial Need, and types/sources of Financial Aid.
Jump Starting Your Career at JJC (Business, Culinary, Technical)
This session will cover opportunities available to students attending Joliet Junior College including certificate programs, employable skill programs, associate degree programs, & transitioning to a 4-year school. Scholarships, resources, and the admissions process will also be mentioned.
NCAA/NAIA Eligibility for Student Athletes
This session is for any family of any student-athlete who has aspirations of playing collegiately. We will cover academic requirements needed for all college levels, a timeline for what to do and when as well as some basic recruiting information.
Pathways to College & Career Readiness
This session will demonstrate how counselors work with students to develop their Career and College plans based on the 6 LTHS Pathways and the Illinois State College and Career Readiness Standards. We will also provide steps students and families can take to reach their Career and College goals.
SchooLinks Planning Tool Overview
This session will provide information on how the SchooLinks online College and Career Readiness Tool is used with LTHS students in exploring options for all post-secondary pathways and how parents can partner with their students through their own Parent Portal.
Trade Schools & Union - How To Get There
This session will discuss the ins and outs of applying to a trade school /union/apprenticeship program. A few points that will be covered: what age can you apply, what qualifications are they looking for, and what can students do to prepare themselves for application time.
Each session will be 40 minutes. Families may choose to attend any session. Please note: Each presentation will only be offered once throughout the evening.
