On March 3, 12 Lockport Township High School drafting and design students participated in the Illinois Drafting Educators Association (IDEA) regional competition held at Joliet Junior College, including Giovanni Onesto, Kayla Hill and Adrian Gajdzis in Introductory Computer Aided Drafting; Scott Manhart, Andrew Hensen and Patrick Kunst in Architecture 3D Drafting; Joseph Fill, Patrick Dilger and Victoria Hennessey in Machine Computer Aided Drafting; and Dale Westberg, Ian Cozzi and Alexa Kocsis in 3D Solids.
CAD/Drafting students from 10 schools in the Three Rivers Education for Employment System (TREES) attended this year’s competition. At the competition, students are given a drawing problem to solve and draw in a one and half hour time limit. The designs are graded by architects, engineers and college students and college instructors.
The students who place in the top two in each category advance to the state competition to be held Saturday, April 22, at Illinois State University.
The following LTHS students placed:
· Giovanni Onesto - 1st Place -Introductory CAD
· Kayla Hill – 2nd Place -Introductory CAD
· Adrian Gajdzis – 3rd Place -Introductory CAD
· Joseph Fill– 1st Place -Mechanical CAD
· Patrick Kunst – 1st Place -3D Architecture CAD
· Scott Manhart – 2nd Place -3D Architecture CAD
“Our region is one of the largest in the state with 10 high schools competing, so it is quite an accomplishment and honor to place in the top three at the JJC regional. Because of all of the LTHS student’s success we are also the regional champions as a school,” said LTHS drafting teacher Jeff Brown.
Student Joe Fill agrees and said “this competition will help me prepare to go to college and become an electrical engineer. Competing against others directly relates to design situations I will face in the engineering field.”
Good luck to the 1st and 2nd place finishers who will compete at the state competition in April!
